Moving to Sweden by road

Sweden is reached by road through the Netherlands, Germany and Denmark, crossing the Øresund Bridge into Skåne, or by North Sea ferry to Gothenburg. One crew loads at your door in Britain and unloads at your door in Stockholm, Gothenburg or Malmö.

A long way north, with straightforward rules

Sweden is further than it looks: the drive to Stockholm is close to 2,000 km, and a run to the north of the country is longer still. Our vehicles cross the Channel, drive up through northern Europe and cross the Øresund Bridge, or take the freight ferry directly to Gothenburg.

Swedish customs are efficient and the transfer of residence relief is clear. The documents that matter are your residence permit, where needed, and your registration with Skatteverket, the Swedish Tax Agency.

Where we deliver in Sweden

Door-to-door transit times from UK collection, with what to expect at the delivery end. Dedicated vehicles are at the quick end; part loads wait for a scheduled departure and share the journey.

Malmö, Lund & Skåne

3–5 days dedicated · 6–11 part load

The first stop over the Øresund Bridge, and the quickest Swedish run. Many people working in Copenhagen live here.

Gothenburg & the west coast

3–5 days dedicated · 6–12 part load

Reachable by North Sea ferry as well as by road. Hillside streets in the city and island properties in the archipelago.

Stockholm & Uppsala

4–7 days dedicated · 7–14 part load

Apartment buildings with small lifts, city congestion charges and archipelago homes that need a boat for the final leg.

Central Sweden

5–7 days dedicated · 8–14 part load

Västerås, Örebro, Linköping and the lakes. Red timber houses down forest roads, best reached outside the spring thaw.

Northern Sweden

By arrangement

Umeå, Luleå and beyond the Arctic Circle. Long distances and winter conditions, quoted individually.

Transit times are typical, not guaranteed. Drivers' hours are regulated, so longer runs include mandatory rest, and customs clearance is usually a matter of hours when the paperwork is right.

Dedicated vehicle or part load

Road freight is priced on the space you occupy in a vehicle and the distance it drives. Volume decides which makes sense.

Dedicated vehicle

A full house · your load only

The vehicle carries nothing but your belongings and drives straight to your new address in Sweden. Fastest, with fixed dates for loading and delivery. Usually the right answer for a three-bedroom house or larger.

Part load

A flat or part of a house · shared vehicle

You pay for the space you use and share the journey with other consignments heading the same way. Considerably cheaper, with a delivery window of a few days rather than a fixed date.

Small consignments

A few boxes or a single room

Students, second homes, a room of furniture for a relative. We consolidate these onto our scheduled Swedish runs.

Storage at either end

When the dates don't line up

Completion dates and visa appointments rarely line up with a UK moving date. We hold goods in containerised storage in the UK and deliver when you are ready.

Customs and documents for Sweden

Sweden applies the EU transfer of residence relief through Tullverket. These are the documents that most often need obtaining by you rather than by us.

What you will need

We prepare the export and import declarations and the valued inventory. Several of the documents below can only be issued to you personally, so start them early.

  • Residence permit, if neededSince Brexit British citizens generally need a residence permit from Migrationsverket to live in Sweden, unless covered by the Withdrawal Agreement. It is a key part of the evidence of residence.
  • Registration with SkatteverketRegistering in the Swedish population register, folkbokföring, gives you a personnummer and proves that you live in Sweden.
  • Proof of your Swedish addressA rental contract, a purchase contract or a letter from your employer confirming your move.
  • Evidence of leaving the UKA sale completion, the end of a tenancy or similar evidence that your residence is genuinely changing.
  • A valued inventoryItemised and priced, prepared by us, with the customs application for duty-free import of moving goods.
  • Six months’ ownershipGoods must have been owned and used for at least six months before the move to qualify for relief.

Customs and immigration requirements change. We confirm the current position for Sweden at survey and give you a written checklist before anything is packed.

The last hundred metres

Swedish deliveries are well organised. Distance and season are the variables.

  • Winter conditionsWinter tyres are mandatory in wintry conditions from December to March, and northern routes can be slow. We plan winter moves with extra time.
  • Congestion chargesStockholm and Gothenburg charge vehicles entering the centre. It is included in our price, and it affects the delivery time we propose.
  • Archipelago homesIsland properties may need a ferry or a barge for the final leg. We arrange it locally and quote it in advance.
  • Apartment liftsSwedish city lifts are often small. Large furniture may need to go by stairs or an external lift, which we check before the day.
SealedYour vehicle is sealed at loading and not opened in transit
Secure parkingOvernight stops at guarded compounds, never a lay-by
Same crewThe people who load in Britain unload at your new home
No portGoods are never containerised, craned or double-handled

Moving to Sweden: common questions

How long does a move to Sweden take?

Malmö and Gothenburg are usually three to five days with a dedicated vehicle, Stockholm four to seven. Part loads take longer because Nordic consignments are combined for each departure.

Can I bring alcohol to Sweden?

Alcohol can travel but must be declared, sits outside the relief and is subject to Swedish excise duty, which is high. A wine collection needs a decision and a budget before it is packed.

Can I bring food?

Meat and dairy products from the UK cannot enter the EU, including opened packets in the kitchen. Empty the fridge and the larder.

Can you move my car to Sweden?

We arrange vehicle transport alongside the move. Registering a UK car in Sweden involves customs, an origin check with Transportstyrelsen and a registration inspection. Right-hand drive cars can be registered, but it is worth asking before you decide.

What does a move to Sweden cost?

Volume first, then distance, then whether you need a dedicated vehicle or can share one. Use the volume estimator on our home page for a sense of scale, then let us survey and quote in writing. Our prices page explains what goes into the figure.
