Moving to Portugal by road

Portugal is reached by road through France and Spain, or by ferry to northern Spain and on from there. One crew loads at your door in Britain and unloads at your door in Lisbon, Porto or the Algarve, with the paperwork arranged before the vehicle leaves.

The consulate appointment comes first

The road journey to Portugal is long but routine: two to three days of driving with mandatory rest, or a ferry to Santander that cuts out most of France. Your goods stay in one sealed vehicle from start to finish.

The step that catches people out is the certificado de bagagem, a certificate issued by the Portuguese consulate in the UK that Portuguese customs expect before releasing household goods free of duty. The appointment is the bottleneck, so book it before anything else.

Where we deliver in Portugal

Door-to-door transit times from UK collection, with what to expect at the delivery end. Dedicated vehicles are at the quick end; part loads wait for a scheduled departure and share the journey.

Lisbon & Cascais

4–6 days dedicated · 6–12 part load

Steep, narrow streets in the historic centre, trams and limited parking. Delivery into the old city often needs a smaller vehicle and a municipal permit.

Porto & the north

3–5 days dedicated · 6–11 part load

The quickest Portuguese run via the Santander ferry. Granite townhouses with tight staircases are the usual challenge.

The Silver Coast & central Portugal

4–5 days dedicated · 6–12 part load

Óbidos, Caldas da Rainha, Coimbra and the inland villages, where farm tracks and quintas need an access check before the vehicle is chosen.

The Algarve

4–6 days dedicated · 7–12 part load

Lagos, Tavira, Loulé and the golden triangle. A regular part-load destination, with villas on steep roads and gated communities.

The Alentejo

4–6 days dedicated · 7–12 part load

Remote properties down unmade roads. We confirm access by photograph and map before deciding the vehicle size.

Madeira & the Azores

By arrangement

Served by sea from the mainland. Allow additional time and ask us for a specific quotation.

Transit times are typical, not guaranteed. Drivers' hours are regulated, so longer runs include mandatory rest, and customs clearance is usually a matter of hours when the paperwork is right.

Dedicated vehicle or part load

Road freight is priced on the space you occupy in a vehicle and the distance it drives. Volume decides which makes sense.

Dedicated vehicle

A full house · your load only

The vehicle carries nothing but your belongings and drives straight to your new address in Portugal. Fastest, with fixed dates for loading and delivery. Usually the right answer for a three-bedroom house or larger.

Part load

A flat or part of a house · shared vehicle

You pay for the space you use and share the journey with other consignments heading the same way. Considerably cheaper, with a delivery window of a few days rather than a fixed date.

Small consignments

A few boxes or a single room

Students, second homes, a room of furniture for a relative. We consolidate these onto our scheduled Portuguese runs.

Storage at either end

When the dates don't line up

Completion dates and visa appointments rarely line up with a UK moving date. We hold goods in containerised storage in the UK and deliver when you are ready.

Customs and documents for Portugal

Portugal applies the EU transfer of residence relief through the Autoridade Tributária. These are the documents that most often have to be obtained by you rather than by us.

What you will need

We prepare the export and import declarations and the valued inventory. Several of the documents below can only be issued to you personally, so start them early.

  • NIF tax numberThe número de identificação fiscal is required for the customs claim and for almost everything else, from a lease to a bank account.
  • Certificado de bagagemIssued by the Portuguese consulate in London or Manchester, listing the goods you are bringing. It is usually needed before the goods travel, and appointments can take weeks.
  • Residence visa or cardSince Brexit British citizens need a residence visa, such as the D7 or a work visa, or a residence card under the Withdrawal Agreement.
  • Proof of your Portuguese addressA rental contract or deed of purchase, and evidence that you have registered your residence.
  • A valued inventoryItemised and priced, prepared by us, matching the list on the consulate certificate.
  • Six months’ ownershipGoods must have been owned and used for at least six months before the move to qualify for relief.

Customs and immigration requirements change. We confirm the current position for Portugal at survey and give you a written checklist before anything is packed.

The last hundred metres

Portugal’s old towns were built on hills, and the final hundred metres decide how the delivery works.

  • Hills and cobblesLisbon and Porto are steep, and historic streets are often too narrow for a removal vehicle. We shuttle the load in smaller vans where needed.
  • Municipal permitsStopping a vehicle in a city street usually needs a permit from the câmara municipal, applied for in advance.
  • Exterior liftsApartment staircases are frequently narrow and winding. An external furniture lift is often the only way to deliver larger items safely.
  • Rural tracksQuintas and country properties are often reached by unmade roads. Photographs of the approach let us plan properly rather than guess.
SealedYour vehicle is sealed at loading and not opened in transit
Secure parkingOvernight stops at guarded compounds, never a lay-by

Moving to Portugal: common questions

Why does the certificado de bagagem matter so much?

Portuguese customs generally expect it before they release household goods under the relief. If the goods arrive before the certificate exists, they wait in storage while it is obtained, which adds cost and time.

How long does a move to Portugal take?

Porto and the north are usually three to five days with a dedicated vehicle. Lisbon and the Algarve take four to six. Part loads add a few days while the vehicle delivers other consignments on the way.

Can I bring food and alcohol?

Meat and dairy products from the UK cannot enter the EU. Alcohol must be declared and is outside the relief, so duty is payable.

Can you move my car to Portugal?

We arrange vehicle transport alongside the move. Importing a UK car into Portugal can involve significant vehicle tax (ISV), though relief may apply when you are transferring residence. Ask before you assume it is worth bringing.

What does a move to Portugal cost?

Volume first, then distance, then whether you need a dedicated vehicle or can share one. Use the volume estimator on our home page for a sense of scale, then let us survey and quote in writing. Our prices page explains what goes into the figure.
